Felon

I was unsure about this movie from the get-go. I'm not a huge Val Kilmer fan since Top Gun ruined me (though Willow won me back). Here's the plot. Guy accidentally kills a burglar by hitting in the head with a bat after the burglar runs out of buglaree's house. Guy goes to jail because he should have let the burglar run free – odd, but whatever. The guy pleads guilty hoping to get like 15 months in prison for manslaughter (not murder). Then a whole bunch of stuff happens that extends his prison time. He has to fight his way to the top against other inmates and against the guards. Val Kilmer ends up being his cell mate and tries to teach him the ropes. Val is well connected. The guys fiancĂ© leaves him and then comes back because their kid won't part with daddy's stuff. So you know there is a ton of bloody fighting in this movie, but it is the only prison movie I've seen where there's no raping. Maybe prisons have changed their tune these days. It's a decent movie, but it does seem a tad long. The good guys win in the end, so it's not all bad, I guess. I'm about half way to recommending this one to people. If you combine Willow and Fight Club, you get this movie.
